Puerto Rico’s casinos request extension on their imposed closing time

Operators in Puerto Rico are requesting an extension on imposed closing time to generate more income and make up the financial losses

An inspection was carried out in order to verify the compliance with the security and sanitary measures imposed in Puerto Rico Casinos. This?investigation was done by The Tourism and Social Welfare Committee of the House of Representatives at the Casino del Mar, of the La Concha Renaissance San Juan Resort hotel in Condado, after which Néstor Alonso Vega (seen below), president of the commission, expressed “The hotel and casino industry is one of the most? economically affected ?by the pandemic, so it is necessary to seek alternatives to help strengthen this sector. We could see that they are following all the protocols, and have adopted other additional measures for the protection of people who are going to use gaming machines.

Every time a person gets up from a table or machine, they disinfect the area. The management of this casino asks to continue limiting the capacity of people allowed inside the casinos for security reasons, but they ask to extend the closing time. It is something that the governor has to evaluate and it should be taken into account in the next revision of the executive order,’.

While on the investigation, Sigdrido de Jesús, manager of Casino del Mar, suggested that the casino working hours, which are currently from 6:00 a.m to 9:00 p.m to be extended till midnight, as the casino, as many other venues, has been dealt a heavy blow to their finances during the pandemic.

It’s worth mentioning that Puerto Rico has 16 working casinos, which generate an amount of US $250 million annually, in addition to an estimate of 3,000 direct jobs which have been affected since last March when the measures against COVID-19 were being incorporated.
