Commercial casino in Detroit revenues picking up despite strict capacity restrictions

Detroit’s commercial casinos reported $87.9 million in combined revenues during the month of September

Despite a limited capacity of just 15%, Detroit’s commercial casinos reported $87.9 million in combined revenues throughout its three casinos during the month of September. This comes after a full month of service since shutdown in March.

Due to high demand, revenue from slots and tables games were down by only 22% when compared to September 2019 however, saw an increase of about 27% during the month of August. This contributed to the casinos reopening on the 5th of the shortened month.

commercial casino in detroitMGMs Grand Detroit’s revenue has seen a year on year drop of approximately $361 million (41 percent of total revenues), 17.3 percent to $32.2 million at MotorCity (37 percent), and 27.2 percent to $19.6 million at Greektown (22 percent).

Sports betting accounted for another $4.4 million across the three casinos: MGM $2.1 million, MotorCity $1.6 million, and Greektown $722,000.

During the first two quarters of the year the aggregate casino revenue declined  58% when compared to the same period during 2019.

State gaming taxes for September consisted of $7.1 million, which has seen a significant drop of 22% from the $90.1 million paid in September 2019. Additionally, Sports betting generated tax amounting to $165,000 whilst $202,000 to the city of Detroit.

Fantasy sport numbers were released for August amounting to $2.3 million, with taxes nearing $190,000 to the state.
